States with Rent Control
Currently, California, Oregon, New York, New Jersey, and Washington DC have statewide rent control or stabilization laws. Several other states have cities with local rent control ordinances.
- California: 5% + CPI (max 10%)
- Oregon: 7% + CPI (max 10%)
- NYC: Rent Stabilization Board sets limits
Notice Requirements
Even in states without rent control, landlords must provide advance notice before raising rent. The required notice period varies by state, typically ranging from 15 to 90 days.
- Most states: 30 days notice
- Oregon: 90 days notice
- Some states: 60 days for longer tenancies
