A late rent notice puts an overdue balance in writing. Its value is evidential: it records what was owed, on what date, and how the tenant was told — which is exactly what is missing when a rent dispute is reconstructed months later from memory.

Who this document is for

  • A landlord whose tenant has missed a rent payment
  • A property manager creating a paper trail before further steps
  • Anyone who needs a dated record of an overdue balance

When to use something else

Using the wrong document is the most expensive mistake in this category, because the paperwork looks complete while doing the wrong thing. This is not the document for:

What the generated document contains

  • Landlord and tenant names, and the property address
  • The amount outstanding and the period it covers
  • The date rent was due and the date of the notice
  • Any late fee stated in the lease
  • How the notice was delivered
  • Signature block

State and local requirements

Requirements for this document differ by state, and sometimes by city. Notice periods, deposit limits, permitted fees and required disclosures are all set locally, and a number that is correct in one state can be wrong in the next one.

This page does not state those figures. The questionnaire asks you for the values that apply to your tenancy and prints what you enter, so the document reflects your situation rather than a national average. Start with the state lease pages for the jurisdiction you are renting in.

Frequently asked questions

No, and the difference matters. A late rent notice tells a tenant that rent is overdue. An eviction notice is a formal step toward ending the tenancy and carries requirements a late rent notice does not. Sending the wrong one can waste the notice period entirely.

Once rent is late under the lease, including any grace period the lease gives. The generator asks for the due date and the notice date so both appear in the document.

Only if the lease provides for one, and limits on late fees vary by state and sometimes by city. The notice states the fee your lease sets — it does not calculate a fee for you or assert what your state allows.

Delivery is often what gets disputed, so the notice records the method you used. Keep proof — a certified mail receipt, a photograph of a posted notice, a saved email.

Then the notice did its job. Keep a copy regardless: a documented history of late payment is what supports a decision not to renew, or a later deposit deduction.
