The notice periods Vermont law sets for ending a periodic tenancy, as LeaseCraft read them in the statute, with the conditions and exceptions that go with each. The guided form prepares the notice to vacate with Vermont already selected.

Vermont notice periods

Each period is the one LeaseCraft's record of the statute holds. Read it with the conditions under it: some periods are minimums and some apply unless the lease sets another. "Lease controls" means the record holds no statutory period for that situation, and "No pre-suit notice" means it holds no notice before filing. The source column shows the law and the date LeaseCraft read it on the official site (most recently 2026-09-27).

What the Vermont statute says

Ending a month-to-month tenancy: 60 days

  • No written rental agreement, rent payable monthly, tenant in occupancy two years or less: actual notice at least 60 days after the date of the actual notice; more than two years: at least 90 days (9 V.S.A. 4467(c)(1)).
  • Written rental agreement with a stated term: at least 30 days (tenancy two years or less) or 60 days (more than two years) 'before the end or expiration of the stated term' (4467(e)).
  • Contracted sale of the building: at least 30 days after the date of the actual notice (4467(d)). Owner-occupied shared-room arrangements have separate rules (4467(h)).

Ending a week-to-week tenancy: 21 days

  • No written rental agreement, rent payable weekly: actual notice at least 21 days after the date of the actual notice (9 V.S.A. 4467(c)(2)).

Notice by length of occupancy: Under 24 months: 60 days; 24 months or more: 90 days

  • Applies to no-cause termination of a monthly tenancy without a written rental agreement (9 V.S.A. 4467(c)(1)): 60 days if the tenant has resided two years or less, 90 days if more than two years.
  • Written-term analogue (4467(e)): 30 days before end of term if two years or less, 60 days if more than two years.

Tenant staying after the lease ends: 30 days

  • End of a written rental agreement's stated term: landlord must give actual notice at least 30 days (tenancy two years or less) or 60 days (more than two years) before the end or expiration of the stated term (9 V.S.A. 4467(e)); no separate post-holdover notice found.

Preparing the notice

The form asks for the tenancy, the date the tenant must leave and how the notice is delivered, and states the notice period plainly. You enter the period; where LeaseCraft has verified the Vermont period for ending a month-to-month tenancy, it refuses a shorter one.

A notice is not a court order and does not by itself remove a tenant. Cities and counties can add rules. LeaseCraft is not a law firm and this is not legal advice.
