What a Rent Receipt is
A rent receipt is the landlord's written acknowledgment that a tenant paid rent. It names who received the money and who paid it, the rental property, the amount, the payment date and method, and the rental period the payment covers. For a check, the check number ties the receipt to the payment.
Receipts matter most when rent is paid in cash or money order, when a tenant pays part of the rent, or when a payment covers more than rent, such as a pet or parking fee. The receipt LeaseCraft builds acknowledges only the payment you enter: it does not add late fees or interest, and it does not say a balance is owed unless you enter one. The person who received the payment signs it, and the tenant keeps a copy as proof of payment.
Some states require a landlord to give a receipt for cash rent or on request. The rules differ by state, so check yours if you take cash.
When to use it
- A tenant pays rent in cash or by money order and needs proof of payment.
- A tenant asks for a receipt for their records, a subsidy program or a tax return.
- A payment covers only part of the rent, or rent plus another charge.
- You want a numbered record of each payment alongside your rent ledger.

It depends on your state. Some states require a receipt for cash payments or when the tenant asks. Even where it is not required, a signed receipt is a simple record for both sides.
